In November 2018, we launched our Independent Creator Program to help promote cutting edge spatial computing experiences.

The brief was simple: tell us your best development idea and we’ll help make it happen.

We were thrilled to receive over 6,500 entries, from location-based experiences and spatial computing gaming concepts, through to ideas that could revolutionize the future of enterprise. After careful deliberation, we selected those projects that would really benefit from our development support and guidance.

As more finalists publish their experiences to Magic Leap World, we’ll be sharing their thoughts about developing for Magic Leap One.

We chatted with the CEO of Immersion Analytics, Bob Levy, to find out about their application for Magic Leap One, and why the future of data visualization is going to be spatial. Bob has over a decade of senior-level experience leading product teams at IBM & MathWorks creating enterprise dataviz and analytics products, and 9 years’ experience delivering tools for enterprise developers.

What problems does Immersion Analytics Visualizer software solve?

The software solves enterprise’s data issues by allowing businesses to easily visualize, fully understand and effectively utilize its data. Immersion Analytics helps businesses, such as financial institutions, to find valuable insights in their data, so as to better visualize their opportunities and risks.

What’s your company background and how did your team get into XR?

Our company was founded on a core principle: To offer the best data visualization, analysis, and communication solutions. This means allowing multiple columns of a database to be seen in a single view, which is something that has never been done before – in fact, it’s game changing. It allows for insights to be discovered in data that have always been hidden. Only with the capabilities of XR could our full vision be realized.

Most spreadsheets and databases have more than four columns, but four columns is all that a typical X, Y, size and color scatter plot can represent. As a result, mistakes get made, insights are missed, and very poor decisions impact companies every day. To solve this problem, we applied a variety of display technologies, including XR, to enrich the user’s experience of data. In fact, Dr. Erik Demaine, an MIT CSAIL professor and recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, helped us demonstrate mathematically how our approach uniquely expands users’ perspective across data by up to 3060x.

What’s the make-up of your team - what type of talents and skill sets came together to create Immersion Analytics?

When we made the move from 2D to XR, we not only created our core solution, but we also identified a wider challenge and opportunity in the knowledge-worker segment. We realised we could help companies working in a 2D world to bring all sorts of data into an XR space. Our company talent pool was already firmly rooted at the intersection of enterprise software, visualization, and data science. To develop our ultimate XR Deep Water™ architecture we needed to draw upon the specific talents of an even wider set of domains, including low-level GPU programming, HPC, data architecture, data analysis, functional programming and enterprise integration.

Our unique XR visualization had to move far beyond the real-time animation capabilities employed within video games, so our team developed its own custom proprietary Visualization Engine - a key part of our Deep-water™ architecture. In the end, our team leveraged these strong results and expanded our product vision, going beyond data visualization to include an SDK product capable of bringing data from other ISVs into spatial computing. Because of our focus on the enterprise segment, our SDK product is tailored to languages already familiar to those customers, for example, Python, Java, and MATLAB. Through this simpler process, enterprise-focused ISV developers can create killer applications that leverage spatial computing and XR without ever installing an unfamiliar game development engine like Unity.

Can you talk about why you decided to develop for Magic Leap One?

Our company is founded on creating revolutionary new ways to see and use data. And in many ways, our vision parallels Magic Leap’s. We see the Magic Leap One platform as the backbone of information exchange in the future. Once we saw the incredible opportunities it presented, it was an easy jump for us to get on board and help make that vision a reality.

How did the idea for Visualizer™ as a data analytics and communication platform come about?

Our company’s eureka moment combines one part quantitative finance with two parts helicopter pilot lessons. You may wonder what the two things could possibly have in common? The answer becomes clear when you consider the large number of factors both need to juggle in order to be successful. It was while learning to fly a helicopter that I realized the human mind is capable of juggling many factors at once. This epiphany inspired the invention of the patent pending technology behind Immersion Analytics.

Who is the target market for Visualizer?

Immersion Analytics’ Visualizer software, built on our Deep Water architecture, focuses on the enterprise segment and substantially improves the lives of knowledge workers in three key ways:

  • Increasing Dimensional Perspective: In enterprise today there is too much data to easily visualize, fully understand, and effectively utilize. Unlike AI and Machine Learning, Visualizer leverages human understanding, intuition and database(s) to distill 7, 10, 17 or more columns of data into a single visualization that analysts can understand at scale. Not only does this allow knowledge workers to see up to 3,060 unique plots of data distilled as a single intuitive visualization, but seeing these dimensions together unlocks insights which are otherwise invisible. Whether they are working in diverse functions like Financial Markets, Cybersecurity, Pharmaceutical Research, or supply chain management, a greater perspective on data substantially reduces the time knowledge workers have to spend hunting for the right data or data combinations for their important insights.
  • Realtime Data Collaboration: Visualizer software enables real-time collaboration in a multi-user, virtual data room where you can visualize and discuss your data with your team in XR.
  • Communication: Whether in collaborative mode or within a presentation, Visualizer software users can communicate complex data insights and observations through portable immersive DataViz presentation documents (immersive experiences, 2D videos) that you create, save, and share between users. Being able to show multivariate data and allowing people to see the relative impact of many inputs at once allows conversations that typically would not happen before.

What other benefits are there for the enterprise segment?

Unlike most other XR solutions, we are 100% focused on helping the enterprise segment improve the productivity of its “knowledge workers” in an increasingly fast-paced and data-intensive world. There has been a dearth of innovation applying XR to data visualization so as to enable understanding that’s not possible on flat screens.

We’re changing that.

We also help enterprise IT developers. The video game engines and software platforms used in spatial computing development are fundamentally different to those typically used by enterprise software developers. This skill incompatibility makes transitioning to XR in enterprise more challenging. That’s why we’ve developed a robust SDK that enterprise developers can leverage from familiar technologies & workflows to realize the benefits of spatial computing from applications they develop.

What are some of the ways a platform like Visualizer can be used? How does it allow data analysts to surface insights in ways that aren’t possible in 2D environments?

Edward Tufte was right when he said, “The world is complex, dynamic, multidimensional; the paper is static, flat. How are we to represent the rich visual world of experience and measurement on mere flatland?” Our visualizations uncover perspectives on your data beyond what’s practical to see using standard plots on dashboards. Seeing many more data columns and possible combinations all at once draws your attention to those parts of your dataset that present the most interesting anomalies and patterns. The comparable and impractical alternatives include viewing up to 3,060 standard plots or trying to anticipate which combinations of columns matter – and in the process they ignore many of the unique perspectives offered by the data.

Where AI and machine learning alternatives might make sense, they still lack the ability to codify all pertinent business contexts, human commonsense, and intuition into the training dataset. Immersion Analytics Visualizer becomes a powerful supplement to these approaches, literally enabling your subject expertise and awareness of possible model failures to improve the analysis outcomes.

Which industry segments are you targeting? How are they using Visualizer?

Immersion Analytics genesis was in finance applications. Initial use cases focused on risk management and alpha generation (two sides of the same coin), as well as portfolio management and quantitative research. The short summary is that Immersion Analytics helps businesses, such as the financial institutions we described, find valuable insights in their data. This allows the enterprise to use our market-leading, immersive data visualization and immersive analytics software to visualize business opportunities and risks in ways never before possible. Our recently publicized company partnerships within the business intelligence industry are expanding our reach into other industries where improved data perspective and multivariate dimensionality are critical for business success.

What gets you excited for the future?

The growth of 5G networks and edge computing are opening new avenues for us both in the types of data and the size of the databases our users will be able to explore. History has shown us that human thirst for more data, available at faster speeds, has driven innovation from snail mail and landlines to cell phones and the internet. The world of near-instantaneous access to incredible amounts of data through 5G and cloud computing will require the next generation of data understanding and communication. We see our company as a leader in making this evolution happen.
